The basics:
Who is Juliet James?
I’m a writer, a wife, a wanna be mother, a graduate student and someone who never thought of herself as an activist, but maybe is, just a little.
Why Eating My Cake?
The name refers to the concept in Intuitive Eating that no food is off limits. So often when dieting we’re given the old cliché that we can’t have our cake and eat it, too. Usually added to that with a wink and a soulless chuckle is some snarky comment like, well unless you want it on your hips - because remember, a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips! That and nothing tastes as good as thin feels, and yes, that includes your grandmother’s homemade chocolate cake with the incredible chocolate frosting. Funny thing is, once I was thin and it didn’t feel all that great.
What is this Intuitive Eating stuff you babble about?
Intuitive Eating (IE) is not a diet. That’s the first thing you need to know. If you’re only asking because you wonder if you can lose weight this way and still eat, you’re not ready for it yet. If, however, like me and so many others, you’re truly exhausted with the dieting roller coaster, this may be your salvation. It’s not easy to explain, and so I recommend you investigate this website, which is a support site for the book my therapist had me read that I will often refer to.
Can I do IE with something like South Beach or Weight Watchers?
Though some people want to claim this is possible, it’s not. Both SB and WW require food restriction, though admittedly in vastly different ways (unless you follow Core on WW, which is similar to SB). IE will NOT work if you are restricting food in any way, or even simply applying rules to the way you eat. For example, saying you can only eat at a certain time, or that you can only eat certain types of food. Like a raw diet or an organic diet. I don’t think a “raw diet” can ever be compatible with IE. However, if you genuinely WANT to eat all raw foods, that’s fine. Same goes with organic foods. What matters is that you’re not closed off to eating foods that don’t fit in those rules. If you can’t do that, you’re not eating intuitively. You’re dieting. Really. I swear.
What’s the point of this website?
Well, while I am sure to use this site as a tool in my own journey, I also hope to raise awareness for others about body acceptance. While I support bloggers writing about fat acceptance, and think it’s a legitimate cause, I am mainly interested in helping women realize the media and diet companies/programs conspire against us. Seriously. The dieting industry is a $50 billion dollar a year industry. If we could succeed on those diets, that amount would drop dramatically. It’s not in their best interest to care about your best interest. I want women to feel comfortable with themselves as they are right now. I want women to realize they are worthy, no matter what size they wear or how saggy their boobs might be.
How can I contact you directly?
You can email me! I’d love if you did, actually. As long as it’s not to send me spam, of course. Just drop me a line at juliet at eatingmycake dot com. Don’t wanna make it easier for the spammers to get me. If you run into trouble, leave a comment and I’ll email you back. Don’t worry, no one can see your email addy but me, and I won’t spam you. I promise. You can also add me as a friend on MySpace by clicking here.
So… for now, that’s all. The page will likely change as I do.
xoxo,
Jules
PS. I need to thank the three photographers and cupcake geniuses who let me use their photos for my site.
First, from the left: Dana
In the middle: Naomi
Last, on the right: Tasquah
Their cupcakes suited my site perfectly because they are creative, unique and gorgeous. They take something that’s typical and make it remarkable. Thank you all so much!

Hi there, you requested my friendship on MySpace, and I wanted to let you know I am blogging more at this new site: http://www.angelnina.wordpress.com
I like what you have going here and I’d like to be in touch.
Oh, and I’m a cupcake fanatic and believe in intuitive eating.
Sorry… didn’t read this before inquiring about the beautifully crafted cupcake delights– I thought they were your creations.

I just discovered your blog, and I wanted to say I think it’s great! I have just recently (in the past few months) discovered Size Acceptance and IE (recovering WW-er here, too). I have the Tribole and Resch book, and for the most part, I really like it. I am not wild about the fact that they mention weight loss as a possibility, but at least they say “if you need to lose weight, you will,” instead of implying that you absolutely do need to lose. I have no idea what my set point is, but I suspect that I am at or near it already.
I am far from doing IE “perfectly” — in fact, I think I am still in “diet rebellion” stage! But dang, it feels good to go to the supermarket and get *whatever* I want without fretting about whether one cereal has 2 grams less fat than another, etc.
So anyhoo, I’ll definitely be back to visit your site!
And those cupcakes are gorgeous!
